Two rape reports at Reading Festival 2016

The number of reports of robberies, assaults, drug offences and rapes increased at this year's Reading Festival, according to police statistics.

Figures released by Thames Valley Police today show that, although overall reports of crime were down when compared to last year, more serious offences including rape and assault with injury were up.

The figures show there were two rape reports at this year's event, compared to none last year, while assaults with injury were up to six from two last year.

There were six robberies of personal property, compared to none in 2015.

The number of recorded drugs supplying incidents went up from eight to 12, while drug possession numbers were up.

Overall, the number of crimes reported went down to 117 from 147 last year. This included big drops in the number of thefts.

Thames Valley Police said it worked in partnership with events organisers Festival Republic, other emergency services and Reading Borough Council over the six days of Reading Festival and a year's planning was needed.

Superintendent Rory Freeman, police commander for Reading Festival, said: “Reading Festival has been a success, with a capacity audience of 90,000 people throughout the weekend which presents a unique challenge.

“This year we introduced new ways of working to reduce crime including a multi-agency problem solving team consisting of police officers, Reading Borough Council staff and festival security. Their role included targeting issues such as fraud and ticket touts.

“Police officers were also embedded with campsite managers with the aim of providing reassurance, targeting hotspots and reducing crime. These new ways of working proved to be successful and we will look to build on these next year.”

The numbers are made up of the following, unaudited, public reported crimes (figures in brackets are from 2015):

Theft not classified elsewhere 65 (81)

Theft from the person – theft only 33 (50)

Theft from the person – snatch 5 (0)
