Pedestrian safety concerns over Station Road traffic experiment

Concerns over pedestrian safety have been raised since the implementation of the second Station Road traffic experiment. 

Commuters who walk to Burnham Railway Station say they have noticed the difficulty in crossing the road since traffic was able to travel one-way northbound under the railway bridge.

The new traffic flow is phase two of the traffic experiment put in by Slough Borough Council which aims to ease congestion in Burnham Lane and improve access to Burnham Railway Station before Crossrail arrives.

On the Don’t Close Station Road Facebook group, residents have said they find the pedestrian access dangerous.

Steven Gillingwater said: “Does anyone else have an issue regarding pedestrian safety around the station with the new one-way system? It’s improved with traffic flow but has not improved much for pedestrians.

“David Munkley and I were finding it difficult to cross because of the cars turning at the triangle.”

Ryan Scanlan added: “I always have to sprint across (the road) each morning. Small zebra crossing?”

Slough Borough Council responded to say that it has put measures in place to improve the pedestrians’ safety.

A spokesman said: “We have improved the pedestrian crossing facilities on the crossroads immediately outside the station. We’ve provided new pedestrian ‘refuges’ – kerbs that protect pedestrians when coming immediately out of the station.”

Under the permanent proposals for the junction, the council is looking at installing a raised table to slow traffic and to make it easier for pedestrians.

Pedestrian crossing facilities in Burnham Lane are being reviewed as part of the permanent scheme.

Slough Borough Council is monitoring pedestrian movements to look at possibly having two zebra crossings there.

The consultation period for phase two for the traffic experiment is ongoing.
